CONSTITUTION

Name

The name of the organization shall be the Burlington Women’s Basketball League (B.W.B.L.).

Purpose

The purpose of this organization is to promote participation through the game of basketball for women in our community.

Meetings

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) will follow the conclusion of each season.

Officers

There shall be eight officers:

  • President

  • Sponsorship Coordinator

  • Team Coordinator

  • Treasurer

  • Secretary

  • Statistician

  • Social Coordinator

  • Game Coordinator

These eight (8) officers must play on different teams.

Elections

Election of officers takes place at the AGM.

Revisions

Amendments or revisions to the Constitution or By-Laws shall take place at the AGM.

Injuries

The B.W.B.L., as a league, cannot accept responsibility for injuries that occur during the season.

BY-LAWS

1. Award

The winner of the Val Seiersen Memorial Trophy will retain it for the year and return it the following year when it is presented to the new winner.

2. Fees and Registration

Registrations are not accepted if it is known at the time of registration that the player will not be able to complete the season.

Registration fees for the full season will be announced prior to the season.

If a player takes a leave of absence, that person may request a refund for her fees in an amount equal to the prorated fees received by the replacement player, less a $10.00 administration fee.

Should a replacement player not be found or required, a refund cannot be granted.

3. Teams

The Executive grades players and sets teams prior to each playing season.

Eight (8) teams will be made up of nine (9) players each.

If registration is lower than seventy-two (72), then eight (8) teams of eight (8) players will be made.

If registration is lower than sixty-four (64), then six (6) teams of nine (9) players will be made, with a wait list for excess players.

4. Safety

  • Knee braces with hardware must be covered at all times.

  • No jewelry of any kind can be worn. Jewelry must be removed.

5. Concussions

As per Rowan’s Law (Concussion Safety), 2018

Awareness

Each individual is required to provide confirmation every year that they have reviewed the concussion awareness resources prior to registration.

Confirmation may be submitted in writing or electronically.

Code of Conduct

The Code of Conduct must be reviewed annually.

Participants must confirm upon registration that they have reviewed it. Confirmation may be submitted in writing or electronically.

Removal From Sport

A designated person shall remove an athlete from further competition if they become aware that the athlete has sustained a concussion or is suspected of having a concussion, regardless of whether the concussion was sustained or suspected of occurring during an activity associated with the organization.

This process includes:

  1. Identifying signs and symptoms, red flags, and situations requiring 911.

  2. Documenting incidents where an athlete is removed from competition.

Return to Sport

Athletes may return to competition if they provide confirmation that they have:

  1. Undergone a medical assessment by a physician or nurse practitioner and have not been diagnosed as having a concussion; and

  2. Been medically cleared to return to competition by a physician or nurse practitioner.

6. Game Rules

Playing time will consist of four (4) quarters of fifteen (15) minutes each, using run time.

7. Playing Regulations

Eligibility

All participants must be twenty-three (23) years of age or older as of December 31 in the year of registration and must provide proof of age if required.

Minimum Players

A minimum of four (4) players per team is required to start a game.

By ten (10) minutes into the scheduled game time, there must be five (5) players present or the game will be considered a default.

A game is automatically defaulted if there are only three (3) players available at the start of the game.

Interrupted Games

If a game must be stopped due to unforeseen circumstances, such as a severe injury or power outage, the following will apply:

  • If at least half of the game has been played, the score at the time the game is stopped will stand.

  • If the game does not reach halftime, the game will end in a tie.

Attendance

Any player who is absent for three (3) consecutive nights of play without prior notice to their Executive member, or who is absent for a total of five (5) games, may be automatically dropped from the league at the discretion of the Executive.

Rescheduled games played on Wednesdays are included when calculating absences.

Injury-Related Absences

If a player misses a game as a direct result of an injury sustained in the immediately preceding game, and the Executive member is advised, one (1) game will be excused on up to two (2) occasions.

Executive members are to make requests to the Team Coordinator for replacement players.

Replacements will be made at the discretion of the League Executive.

If an injury occurs during a regular-season game, the player may request, in writing, an extension of the six-game rule.

All decisions are final.

Scoring Duties

All players must score the preceding or following game a minimum of two (2) times during the season.

If a player is absent for a game they signed up to score, it will be counted as a missed game.

Player Replacements

If a team does not have nine (9) players due to players quitting, the Executive must replace players to ensure there are nine (9) players on the team at all times, up to and including February 1 of each year.

After February 1, the team will decide whether it wants a replacement player.

When a replacement is made, the player must be of equal rating and position and must be selected from the wait list in order according to the ratings.

Extended Illness or Injury

If a player is absent for three (3) consecutive weeks due to illness or injury, the Executive may request a medical certificate.

A player will be automatically replaced after six (6) consecutive weeks of injury unless a suitable replacement is unavailable.

If a suitable replacement becomes available, the injured player must give up their position on the team.

The injured player may return to the wait list for the same season.

Playing Time

Each participant is entitled to an equal amount of playing time.

League Standings

Standings will be determined as follows:

  • Two (2) points for a win.

  • One (1) point for a tie.

In the event of a tie in the final league standings, positions will be determined in the following order:

  1. Higher standing goes to the team with the most wins.

  2. If still tied, the playing record between the tied teams will determine the higher standing.

  3. If still tied, total points for the entire year will determine the higher standing.

Playoffs

A playoff schedule will be prepared by the Executive and will include the following first-round matchups:

  • 1st vs. 8th

  • 2nd vs. 7th

  • 3rd vs. 6th

  • 4th vs. 5th

Ejections and Suspensions

Any player ejected from a game will be suspended for the following game. The suspension will not affect the player’s attendance record.
